Since coming to the Canal Club, DUB Nation has consistently been some of the most wildest and exciting parties I have ever seen go down in Richmond. Vol. 6 was no different, and with this month’s edition bringing in the likes of Sluggo, Hulk, Dillon Francis, and Kimsey, you can’t really have expected it not to be.
Now a regular on the DUB Nation circuit, my man Kimsey followed the openers to hit the crowd with his own flavor of crazy, high-bpm dubstep. This is the kind of dubstep that all you can do is dance to. No jamming, no head-nodding, just dancing. And I have to admit, it was one of my favorite sets of the night. I think he set a Canal Club record for most stage dives during a set.
Next up was Dillon Francis, on his triumphant return to Richmond since spinning with Audio Ammo at last month’s Brain Drain. Though he set a high bar for himself at the Hat Factory, he managed to live up to it this time around.
I welcomed him back to Richmond and we caught up onstage. “Remember this?” He meant the bottle of Absolut he opens before every show. I remembered.
After that, Dillon passed the tables (and the vodka) to Sluggo, who took advantage of his long set to mix one of the best build ups I’ve heard in dubstep. With the genre being so new to the electronic dance music scene, it tends to be hard to diversify like that, but he pulled it off amazingly. The crowd loved it.
This was all wrapped up by Hulk’s heavy-hitting finishers. I’d never heard the guy before, but I swear he put the crowd into a dance coma. Bass crazy.
As incredible as Vol.6 was, Vol. 7 promises to be better, bringing Excision down to RVA. Get your tickets now, this is going to sell out as fast as Skrillex and Rusko.
